The beta label came off in March, which changes nothing technically and changes a great deal about what can be recommended to a client.
what 6.2 actually shipped:
the beta label removed
the Style Book
template part focus mode
the settings sidebar reorganised
distraction-free mode
openverse in the inserter
what it did not fix:
a template with conditional logic still has no
equivalent, and a query the block editor cannot
express is still a PHP template.
The label mattered because “beta” is a word that ends conversations with people who are paying for the work, and the feature set had been usable for a year before it came off. What has not changed is the ceiling: the site editor covers layout and styling completely and covers logic not at all, so a hybrid theme remains the answer for anything with real conditionals.
