Thirty patterns in one flat list, so nobody could find the one they wanted and everybody asked for a new one.
register_block_pattern_category( 'turkerdev-campaign', array(
'label' => __( 'Campaign layouts', 'turkerdev' ),
) );
// and in the pattern file header
/**
* Title: Campaign hero, two column
* Slug: turkerdev/campaign-hero-two-col
* Categories: turkerdev-campaign
* Description: A hero with a headline, body copy and one image.
*/
The description field is the one people skip and the one that does the work — the inserter shows it, and “a hero with a headline, body copy and one image” is what an editor is searching for, not a title. Six categories over thirty patterns took an afternoon and the pattern requests stopped, which is a better outcome than any of the patterns themselves produced.
