Merging two services removed the HTTP call between them, and with it a retry policy, a timeout, a circuit breaker and their tests.
deleted, in one commit:
the HTTP client wrapper 188 lines
the retry policy 41
the circuit breaker 94
a fallback response 31
their tests 402
a dashboard panel and two alerts
replaced by: a method call.
and the two bugs that went with them: a fallback that
returned stale data during a deploy, and a breaker that
stayed open for five minutes after a single timeout.
Seven hundred and fifty lines of resilience machinery existing to survive a network hop that did not need to exist is the clearest possible accounting of what a service boundary costs. None of it was badly written; all of it was solving a problem the architecture had created.
