A plan output that had grown to four hundred lines for a two-resource change, mostly from a provider that reports every computed attribute.
# what helped, and none of it is new in 1.11:
$ terraform plan -out=tfplan
$ terraform show -json tfplan |
jq -r '.resource_changes[]
| select(.change.actions != ["no-op"])
| "(.change.actions[0]) (.address)"'
update aws_s3_bucket.uploads
create aws_s3_bucket_lifecycle_configuration.uploads
# two lines instead of four hundred.
The JSON plan has been available for years and reading it through a filter is what makes a review possible on a noisy provider. The human-readable output is for a human reading everything, which stops being the right shape somewhere around fifty lines — and a reviewer who scrolls past four hundred lines is not reviewing.
